Overview

The fastest way to log an expense is to snap a photo of the receipt. Knead reads it for you and pre-fills the date, vendor, amount, and a suggested category — so a pile of receipts from Costco becomes a few seconds of tapping instead of a dreaded weekend chore.

Snapping a Receipt

  1. Tap Add Expense to open the form at /expenses/new.
  2. At the top of the form you’ll see the Snap a receipt card with a camera icon and the note “We’ll fill in the vendor, date, amount, and suggest a category.”
  3. Tap Snap Receipt to open the Snap a Receipt bottom sheet (“Take a photo of a receipt to pre-fill the form.”).
  4. Choose how to add the image:
    • On mobile: Take Photo or Choose from Photos
    • On desktop: Upload Image
  5. While Knead reads it, you’ll see “Reading your receipt…” and “This usually takes 5–15 seconds”.

What Gets Filled In

When the receipt is read successfully, Knead auto-fills:
  • Date
  • Vendor
  • Amount
  • A suggested Category
Everything stays editable. Review the fields, fix anything that didn’t read perfectly, then tap Add expense to save. The expense form with vendor and amount filled in after a scan
Pro tip: A flat, well-lit photo with the whole receipt in frame reads best. Crumpled or partial receipts are harder to extract.

Accepted Files and Limits

Receipt photos can be JPEG, PNG, or WebP. You can extract up to 100 receipts per day per business. If you hit that, you’ll see “You’ve extracted 100 receipts today — the limit resets tomorrow.” — your limit resets the next day.

If a Receipt Won’t Read

If the photo isn’t a receipt or can’t be read, you’ll see “That doesn’t look like a receipt — try another photo or enter the expense manually.” Try a clearer photo, or simply type the expense in by hand using the form fields.
Good to know: Receipt snapping just pre-fills the form — there’s no separate step. Once the fields are populated, the expense behaves exactly like one you typed in.
