# Tracking Mileage for Tax Deductions

> Log business trips and claim the IRS standard mileage deduction.

## Overview

Every drive to the restaurant supply store, the farmers market, or a client drop-off is a deductible business mile. Knead's **Mileage** tracker logs your trips and applies the IRS standard mileage rate automatically — and because it locks in the rate at the moment you enter each trip, you never lose deductions when the rate changes mid-year.

## Where to Find Mileage

Tap **Mileage** in the sidebar to open `/mileage`. The page is titled "Mileage" with the description "Track business miles for the standard mileage deduction (Schedule C, Line 9)."

At the top, a summary card shows your **Year**, total **Miles** (with a trip count), and your running **Deduction** in dollars.

## Adding a Trip

1. Tap **Add Trip** to open the form at `/mileage/new`.
2. Set the **Date**.
3. Enter the **Purpose** (e.g. "Costco run for ingredients").
4. Optionally fill in **From (optional)** ("Home") and **To (optional)** ("Costco").
5. Enter your **Miles** (e.g. "12.5").
6. Add **Notes (optional)** if helpful.
7. Tap **Add trip**.

In your list, each trip shows the rate it was logged at — for example "@ 70¢/mi".

## How the IRS Rate Works

Each trip locks in the IRS standard mileage rate at the time you enter it, so you don't lose deductions when the rate changes during the year.

| Tax year | IRS standard rate |
| -------- | -------------------- |
| 2024 | 67¢/mi |
| 2025 | 70¢/mi |
| 2026 | 70¢/mi (provisional) |

<Note>Good to know: Because the rate is locked per trip, a January drive and a December drive in the same year can carry different rates if the IRS updates the rate mid-year — and Knead keeps each one accurate.</Note>

You can filter the list by year using the year selector. Your total mileage deduction flows directly into **Schedule C, Line 9**. Tap the **CSV** button to download the year's trips as `mileage-{year}.csv` — see [Exporting Reports for Your Accountant](/bookkeeping-and-taxes/exporting-reports-for-your-accountant).

<Tip>Pro tip: Log trips as you take them — a quick note of the purpose and miles right after the drive is far easier than reconstructing the year from memory in April.</Tip>
